  • Applying for the Trail Stewardship Team

  • TST Small Group Photo 2
The TST Crew Member application will be available from March 1 to April 11, 2016 on the County employment web page. Jefferson County will be selecting TST Crew Members through interviews of qualifying candidates. The random drawing/lottery process will no longer be used.

Are you a Jefferson County resident, between the ages of 14 and 18 as of June 7, 2016 and want a rewarding and challenging summer work opportunity? Are you able to commit to working for 8 weeks, from June 14 to August 4, Tuesday through Thursday, with no more than two absences? The work is hard and demanding, but it can be fun and enjoyable, too.

Created in 1975, the nationally acclaimed Trail Stewardship Team (TST) has helped thousands of county youth develop a positive work ethic by introducing them to the rewards and realities of the working community. The TST provides much of the physical labor required to maintain and improve natural surface trails, mitigate noxious weeds, and restore natural areas each summer. Each TST worker can expect to cover 200 miles in eight weeks by hiking to and from the job site for trail maintenance.
First-year Crew Members will be chosen based on their application, letter of reference, interview, availability, applicable experience, willingness to follow rules and interest in being part of a team.

TST Crew Members who successfully completed the 2015 season and would like to return to work in 2016 are required to submit an application, letter of reference, and participate in the interview process.

    Application Process

Applications for TST Crew Members (new and returning) must be submitted through the County employment web page by 5 p.m. on April 11, 2016.

    • Please have your social security number before you begin the application.
    • Go to and select the TST Crew Member position. Select “Apply” at the upper right corner.
    • Create your account, fill out the application, upload a letter of reference, and submit the completed application. Your application will be saved to your account to edit and will be available to use next year should you decide to apply again.

A letter of reference is required from an adult who knows you and is not a family or household member. Ask a teacher, counselor, coach, employer, youth group leader, neighbor, or family friend. If you are unable to provide a letter of reference at the time of application, you can submit your application without the letter and bring it to your interview if selected.

If you are not able to upload the letter of reference with the application it can be mailed to Jeffco Open Space – TST, 700 Jefferson County Pkwy, Suite 100, Golden, CO 80401-6017 – or provided at an interview. Letters mailed in will be matched with the corresponding applications.

    What happens after I apply?

    • Your application will be evaluated to determine if you qualify by comparing your skill set and experience to the minimum job qualifications and requirements. After careful review, the hiring team selects which candidates to interview (please note that meeting the minimum qualifications or requirements does not guarantee an interview). Interview candidates will be notified by mail regarding the time of their interview.
    • Interviews will be conducted on Saturdays, April 16, 23 and 30 at the Jefferson County Administration and Courts Facility, 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden. Chosen applicants will be notified by mail in May. Due to the large volume of applicants, we cannot offer feedback to those not chosen, but we encourage you to apply again in the future.
