Welcome to Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS). Explore the outdoors on more than 52,000 acres and 210 miles of trails. Activity Guide | Trail Rating Guide
We promote safe and enjoyable visits to 28 Open Space Parks while practicing responsible management of natural and historic resources. Explore the variety and richness of these resources at Lookout Mountain Nature Center and Hiwan Homestead Museum. Plus, access all the offerings of Jeffco Parks, the Jefferson County Government department that unites JCOS with Boettcher Mansion, Colorado State University Extension and the Fairgrounds.
Community Vision
In 1972, a grassroots volunteer campaign inspired voters to approve a one-half cent sales tax. The tax funds were dedicated to creating JCOS and funding land acquisition, preservation, maintenance and trailbuilding. Thanks to local purchases, dedicated volunteers and widespread public support, visitors enjoy protected places to play without entry fees. JCOS funds also support projects in cities and park and recreation districts, enriching life in every corner of Jefferson County.
