The Existing Conditions map provides a snap shot of the ownerships involved in the mesa as well as the spider web effect of the social trails that have developed over many years of unmanaged use. Depiction of these social trails does not necessarily endorse their continued use, but is a starting point for discussion.
As early as 1977, Jefferson County Open Space acquired a separate parcel of land on the eastern flank of the mesa that has provided some public use. Negotiations with the State of Colorado and US Department of Energy have allowed for limited public use across conservation easements conveyed to Open Space. In 2004, Jefferson County Open Space acquired 730 acres on South Table Mountain from Coors Brewing Company through the Trust for Public Land. This long-sought acquisition helped preserve, either through fee acquisition or conservation easement, the majority of the mesa for Open Space. Amid the public land, approximately 400 acres in three separate parcels remain in private ownership including the mesa's signature Castle Rock feature. Open Space encourages outdoor enthusiasts to be good neighbors. Do not trespass and observe all boundaries and closed areas.
