Nestled into 110 acres of ponderosa pine forest and meadow, the mansion is located within the Lookout Mountain Nature Preserve. From our outdoor kiosk, follow the nature trail between the mansion and the Lookout Mountain Nature Center. The 1 ¼-mile, self-guided trail makes a circle on the property. Notice permanent signposts giving you detailed information about flora and fauna and temporary signs pointing to seasonal wildflowers and plants. Watch for deer (with scrambling fawns in spring), fox, raccoons, Abert’s squirrels (black or gray, tufted-ear critters) and many birds. Look every now and then for spectacular views of the Continental Divide, Pikes Peak and the plains of Denver. For a detailed trail map, please visit the Lookout Mountain Nature Preserve and Trails webpage.
With assistance, wheelchairs can navigate this trail, although it is not to grade because the mansion sits at the highest point of Lookout Mountain (7,500 feet). Begin or end your stroll with a visit to the Lookout Mountain Nature Center, which is operated by Jefferson County's Open Space Division and shares our nature preserve. Here you can learn about the preserve's natural systems through free, year-round exhibits or join a naturalist-guided activity. Nature trails are open 8 a.m. to dusk daily. Call 720-497-7600 for more information.
The Lookout Mountain Nature Preserve is part of the Lariat Loop mountain gateway, a 40-mile scenic and historic byway that includes 27 heritage tourism sites. For more information, visit the Lariat Loop website.
