  • Nutrition Services and WIC                                                                                    web nutrition monthsm

The Nutrition Services/WIC Program offers Jefferson County residents information and education to improve their nutrition knowledge and increase their ability to make better food choices.

Healthy eating habits and good nutrition can improve quality of life and help prevent illness and premature death.

It's a balancing act. Create a balance between the amount of calories you take in and the amount of energy you expend in your day-to-day living. Lack of physical activity and eating too much is killing us.

    Check out these obesity facts:

    • High blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory problems, osteoarthritis and premature death can result from being obese or overweight.
    • 300,000 deaths in the U.S. per year are associated with obesity.
    • Individuals who are obese have a 50 to 100 percent increased risk of premature death.

    Nutrition Services

    • Provides relevant and age appropriate nutrition education and information for a variety of audiences electronically via website, newsletters and educational handouts. Nutrition services also works directly with WIC clients to improve nutrition and provide supplemental food prescriptions.
    • Collaboration with other agencies and nutrition programs.
    • Ongoing coordination of efforts to improve access to appropriate quality food resources to reduce hunger.
