Public Health Kicks Off Tobacco Prevention Media Campaigns on World No Tobacco Day

Jefferson County, Colorado--May 31, 2014 marks World No Tobacco Day, an annual day of observance that addresses the health risks associated with tobacco use and encourages advocacy for policies that can reduce the toll of tobacco. In support of tobacco prevention efforts both globally and locally, Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) is pleased to announce the release of two educational media campaigns – “Jeffco Smoke Free Housing” is a campaign intended to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke and “Sweet, Cheap, and Deadly” a campaign to educate youth about deceptive tobacco industry marketing tactics.

Secondhand smoke in multiunit housing is a serious health concern in Jefferson County. More than 50% of non-smokers report exposure to secondhand smoke in their homes, and rates are higher for homes with children. In an effort to raise awareness and empower residents to protect themselves from secondhand smoke exposure, JCPH has produced outdoor advertisements for bus tails and shelters as well as a video (bit.ly/jeffcoSHSvideo) that will be played in local movie theaters. To learn more about smoke-free housing policies, visit www.JeffcoSmokeFreeHousing.com.

Additionally, young people in Jefferson County are finding a variety of candy-flavored tobacco products within easy reach, and it’s no accident.  The “Sweet, Cheap, and Deadly” campaign features mobile and online advertisements in addition to a video (bit.ly/jeffcoyouthvideo) in movie theaters. The campaign speaks to the fact that tobacco companies are using tactics like sweet flavors, low prices and colorful packaging to attract and addict young people. Learn more about how youth can get involved in taking a stand against the tobacco industry at www.JeffcoTobaccoFreeYouth.com.
