Arvada WIC Celebrates Opportunity to Serve Families at New Location

Jefferson County, CO--The new Arvada Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Clinic, located on the Jefferson County Head Start Campus at 5150 Allison St., Arvada, CO 80002, held its open house from 9-11 a.m. January 13, 2017.

Though the clinic opened in October, area government officials, health and education professionals and families gathered at the large modular building to celebrate what the Arvada WIC clinic supervisor, Meredith Quenzer, RD, CLC, calls an opportunity to better serve the community.

“We are loving being at the new Arvada location,” Quenzer said. “It’s just so conveniently located.”

Not only is the new building easily accessible for clients who use the bus system, but the shared site with Jefferson County Head Start was a perfect fit.

“It’s been really nice to provide access to those families,” she said. “Because we are an income-based program, as is Head Start, all of the families that are already enrolled in Head Start also qualify for WIC. We’re looking forward to strengthening our partnership with Head Start and making sure all of the families that are there have access to our services.”

WIC provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support, prescriptions for healthy food, health referrals and other services free of charge to Colorado families who qualify. WIC’s goal is to help keep pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under age five healthy.

Jefferson County Commissioner Casey Tighe, Arvada Mayor Marc Williams and Jefferson County Public Health Executive Director Dr. Mark B. Johnson cut the red ribbon in the lobby of the clinic to celebrate its opening.

“This is a warm and welcoming site for clients, and we are thrilled to have that,” Johnson said.

After a tour of the facilities, Williams, Tighe and Johnson all thanked Quenzer and her team for the services they provide women and young children in the community.

“I think certainly the importance of having facilities like this, and the important work that goes on with WIC here in Jefferson County, benefit residents throughout the county and here in Arvada as well,” Williams said. “We’re thrilled to have you be part of us and be part of the community.”

During the open house, Quenzer also highlighted the new eWIC program, in which program participants receive their benefits on an electronic beneft card instead of paper checks.
