April is STD Awareness Month Know the facts about Syphilis and how to protect yourself Jefferson County, CO – Low rates of syphilis are a thing of the past according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The report released this month shows that the persistent sexually transmitted disease (STD) is now on the rise again and it has reached a critical high. The current number and rate of cases are higher than they’ve been in more than 20 years. The rise in syphilis requires awareness, attention and action. To underscore the importance of this issue, Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) and the CDC are emphasizing syphilis prevention during STD Awareness month this April. Syphilis rates have risen among women 27 percent from 2014-2015, which has led to a surge in the number and rate of babies born with syphilis (congenital syphilis). Men, and especially gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM), remain hardest-hit by syphilis. According to a CDC study, in 2015, gay and bisexual men made up more than 60 percent of early syphilis cases in United States. JCPH Clinic Supervisor, Kelly Conroy, RN, MPH, explains how important it is to get tested if you suspect you may have an STD. “Sexually transmitted infections are more common than most people believe and often there are no symptoms,” Conroy said. “In addition to practicing safer sex, you can protect yourself and your sexual partners by getting regular STD testing and follow-up treatment as recommended.” The Jefferson County Public Health Clinic offers STI services including testing and treatment. HIV testing and related services are also available. Get tested and ask your partner to get tested. You'll feel better when you know you are both safe.
