    Reappointment of Jefferson County Public Trustee


    Margaret T. Chapman, Golden, was reappointed Jefferson County Public Trustee by Gov. John Hickenlooper on Aug. 14. She took the Oath of Office the morning of Aug. 15.

    She was originally appointed to the office in 2007 by Gov. Bill Ritter and then reappointed in 2011 by Gov. Hickenlooper.

    When asked about changes suggested for the public trustee system, Chapman said, “I concur with Gov. Hickenlooper who intends to seek legislative changes to the state’s public trustee system. His focus is on transparency, accountability and consistency among all trustees statewide. This office has operated in this manner in Jefferson County under my tenure, and that will continue.” She said that she is pleased that she will have the opportunity to participate in efforts to strengthen Colorado’s unique public trustee system.

    Public Trustees handle public transactions and foreclosures on real estate properties. They oversee the administration of Deeds of Trust including releasing them when a loan has been satisfied and foreclosing in the event of default. The public trustee is also responsible for the collection of tax accounts for Land Purchase Contracts for Deeds within his or her county.

    “As Jefferson County Public Trustee, I will continue to work with all Colorado public trustees to strengthen and improve the system. In Jefferson County, we will continue our outreach programs for homeowners and citizens,” Chapman said.

    She also regularly speaks on public trustee issues to town halls, civic groups, real estate associations and offices and community groups.
