Jeffco Historical Commission to Receive an Award

The Jefferson County Historical Commission (JCHC) is adding an award to its list of accomplishments this year. On Wednesday, May 14 at the 24th annual Dana Crawford Award Celebration, the commission will be presented with the 2014 State Honor Award for Preservation Leadership. The ceremony will be at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

The JCHC, established in 1974, was formed to identify and document the county’s historic resources and to encourage Jefferson County residents and visitors to learn more about their community’s colorful history. JCHC takes on a leadership role and acts as the county’s historic preservation gatekeeper by adding its support to local museums, residents, and other agencies with the documentation, designation, preservation and restoration of historic sites and structures.

One of JCHC’s major accomplishments was completing a Cultural Resource Survey, which was started in 1999. The purpose of the survey was to evaluate the historic significance of properties, which are more than 50 years of age, in unincorporated Jefferson County. The final report describes a century of development and more than 4,000 sites and structures. More than 700 potentially significant sites were identified through this project, with multiple property owners expressing an interest in historic designation.

Other signature initiatives include the Jefferson County Landmark Program, which promotes the recognition and preservation of significant buildings, sites and structures; the annual Historic Preservation Symposium, designed to discuss topics of current interest in the historic preservation community; Historically Jeffco, an annual journal that showcases county history, including the articles written by the annual Writer’s Award contest winners; the annual Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony where new local Landmarks and National Register sites are recognized as well as the annual Writers Award winners and Hall of Fame recipients.

JCHC’s long-term commitment to preserving Jefferson County’s heritage continues to have a positive effect on the community by increasing an appreciation for the area’s historic sites and structures, and the county’s heritage.
