    Civil Union licenses can be purchased for $30 (check or cash only) and may be used immediately within the state of Colorado. The license, available at any of the county offices listed below, is valid for 35 days from the issue date.  Civil Union Licenses are recorded at the main office only.  If you need to immediately record your civil union license and/or purchase certified copies, please visit the main office.

    Civil Union license locations are not open on county holidays. Please see the county closures for 2014.

    Civil Union License Requirements

    Parental Consent

    Legal age is 18 or older. If 18 or older and under guardianship, a guardian consent form is required. Access the Guardian Consent Form in the documents section at the bottom of this page.

    Identification

    Legal identification for proof of age is required.

    • Birth Certificate (original or certified copy)
    • Military ID
    • Passport
    • State issued identification

    Required Information

    • Social Security number
    • Place of Birth (City and State)
    • Parents names and current address
    • Divorce/dissolution information (name of spouse/other party and date, place, and court where granted or dissolved)

    Per Colorado Revised Statute 14-14-113, Social Security numbers are required on the civil union license application. If an applicant does not have a Social Security number, an affidavit provided by the clerk’s office must be signed.

    Apply in Person

    Both persons should be present to apply. If this is not possible, one party must appear with a completed and notarized absentee affidavit as well as approved original identification for the absent party. Applicants for a civil union license need not be Colorado residents.

    Certification

    Civil unions may be certified by judges, retired judges, magistrates, Indian tribe officials and clergy (ordained/recognized to lawfully perform marriages, out-of-state clergy need not be registered in Colorado), or by the parties to the civil union. Civil union certificates must include the County and location where the civil union took place, the date of the civil union, the officiating party's signature and title, and both parties' signatures (witnesses are not required). Completed civil union certificate must be forwarded to the County Clerk and Recorder's office within 63 days after the ceremony. Failure to do so may result in late fees.

    Prohibitions

    • One of the parties is still married to or in a civil union with another person.
    • Brother and sister, uncle and niece, or aunt and nephew, whether by half or whole blood.
    • One of the parties is under 18 years of age.

    Per CRS, copies of civil union applications are to be made available to the parties themselves or an immediate family member. To obtain a certified copy of a civil union application, please complete the form and have notarized. Fee is $2.25 per copy.
