2008 Ongoing Capital Projects
Simms Street / Control Tower Access Road at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport
The Road and Bridge Division is partnering with Highways and Transportation and the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport to complete the design and construction of a new control tower access road from Simms Street east. The access road construction will involve earthwork, asphalt paving, drainage, lighting and fence improvements. The road will terminate in a cul-de-sac. A new turn lane will also be constructed on Simms Street. This project began in May and will continue through early August 2008. Please expect intermittent lane closures during construction between the hours of 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Project status: Roadway earthwork is complete. Road and Bridge crews are paving along the east side of Simms Street.

Ken Caryl Avenue and Continental Divide Road Intersection Reconstruction
In April, work began on the reconstruction of the intersection of Ken Caryl Avenue and Continental Divide Road. This reconstruction will address safety issues such as sight distances and pedestrian traffic safety. Highways and Transportation did the design work for the intersection. This project has an estimated completion date of November 2008. Please expect intermittent lane closures between the hours of 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Project status: Road and Bridge crews removed the pavement at the intersection of South Continental Divide Road and Ken Caryl Avenue. Qwest completed their work lowering the fiber optic cable at the intersection and water line lowering should be complete at the end of the week. Concrete crews continue to work on curb, gutter and sidewalk replacement. Ken Caryl Avenue will remain closed between South Simms Street and South Kipling Parkway through June 27th, 2008. Road and Bridge construction crews will:
- Remove all of the surfacing materials on Ken Caryl Avenue at the intersection including curb, gutter, and sidewalk.
- Lower the intersection elevation approximately two feet for improved sight distance.
- Install a perimeter water collection system the length of Ken Caryl from Continental Divide Rd to Kipling Street.
- Incorporate a roadway stabilization fabric along with removal and replacement of substandard soils.
- Install new concrete curb, gutter, and sidewalk.
- Pave the intersection with new asphalt.

Genesee Ridge Road Drainage Improvements
Major drainage improvements were completed in April by Road and Bridge construction crews along 1,300 lineal feet of Genesee Ridge Road. The improvements were necessary to control erosion along the ditchline and to address safety concerns.

Mathews / Winters Open Space Parking Lot Expansion
Road and Bridge construction crews completed the expansion of the parking lot at Mathews / Winters Open Space Park in May 2008. Work included paving access roads to the existing parking lot and adding a turnaround area large enough to accommodate horse trailers. Stormwater Management improvements were made by adding a detention pond and subdrains. Road and Bridge crews also completed preliminary work on the construction of a handicap accessible trail.
