The Liberty Foundation’s P-40 has been modified to allow individuals the unique opportunity of riding in this classic aircraft. Get a sense of what it was like for the “Flying Tigers”. Twenty minute rides are available for $950. Longer flights are available upon request.

Notice for RNAV Scoping Meetings

Federal Aviation Administration RNAV and RNP Procedures at Denver International Airport, Centennial Airport and Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport Public Scoping Meetings for Initiation of Environmental Assessment

As part of its effort to achieve national Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) goals, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is developing new flight routes and procedures in the Denver Metro Area. NextGen, the FAA’s plan to modernize the National Airspace System (NAS) through 2025, will use satellite-based navigation to allow aircraft to fly more direct routes and navigate around inclement weather with the intent to increase airspace capacity and reduce delays. Specifically, the FAA proposes to implement new Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) flight routes and procedures in the airspace surrounding Denver International Airport and two satellite airports, Centennial Airport and Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport. The FAA is working with airport sponsors, airlines, Federal and state park agencies and other stakeholders on routes and procedures that will improve the safety, efficiency, and capacity of the airspace in the Denver area. The FAA is preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) to assess the potential impacts of this action in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Public scoping meetings are being held to initiate the EA process. Although public scoping meetings are not a requirement when conducting an EA (40 CFR 1501.7), the FAA considers an open public process to be an important component of this project. Three public scoping meetings will be held from 5 until 8 PM at the following locations:

    • March 8, 2011: Denver Marriott South at Park Meadows (10345 Park Meadows Drive, Littleton, CO)

    • March 9, 2011: Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, Mt. Evans Conference Room (11755 Airport Way Broomfield, CO)

    • March 10, 2011: Crowne Plaza Denver International Airport (15500 E. 40th Avenue, Denver, CO)

Wings of Freedom Tour

*Coming to Metro – July 7-9*

The Collings Foundation is bringing the Wings of Freedom Tour, which showcases three fully restored WWII Bomber Aircraft, to the Metro Airport Terminal ramp on July 7th to 9th. These aircraft are the 1944 vintage Consolidate B-24J Liberator, the Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress “Nine-O-Nine” and the TP-51C “Betty Jane” Mustang.

The "Wings of Freedom Tour" has two goals: to honor our veterans--recognizing their sacrifices so we may enjoy our freedom; and to educate the visitors, especially younger Americans, about our national history and heritage. The Foundation encourages people to tour the planes, talk to the veterans who come to visit the aircraft, and participate in a "flight experience”. In nineteen years, the tour has made more than 2,172 visits to airports across the United States and Alaska. While the exact number of visitors is difficult to gauge, it is estimated that between 3 and 4 million people see these warbirds annually.

Walk through tours of all the aircraft are $12 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. WWII Veterans get into the ground tours at no charge. Flight experiences donation are $425 per person aboard the B-17 or B-24. Flight training in the P-51 is $2200 for a half hour flight and $3200 for a full hour. All participants will get the chance to feel what it was like to fly one of the most legendary fighters of WWII.

For more information visit the Collings Foundation online at collingsfoundation.org.

Advanced Helicopter Seminars are coming to Metro Airport

Michael Franz , one of the Industry’s most experienced and respected helicopter pilot mentors, is launching his nationwide seminar series this Spring here in Denver. Proudly hosted by Colorado Heli-Ops, this weekend Seminar series provides helicopter pilots a unique opportunity to learn from an experienced mentoring CFI, who has “been there, done that.” Michael has leveraged his vast experience by making a lifetime commitment to passing that knowledge on to others to promote Helicopter Flight Safety and Pilot Employability.

Michael Franz has 42 years of flying spanning a remarkable variety of light helicopter operations including flying Hueys in Vietnam, serving as a US Army helicopter primary instructor, being one of the very first factory-designated Robinson R-22 CFI’s, and being factory trained and teaching in modern equipment such as the Bell 206L, B407 and Eurocopter EC-120. Michael has 7000+ hours of cross-country helicopter flight time encompassing almost every corner of the United States, the Caribbean, and both Eastern & Western Canada. You can get more info about Michael and his seminars from his website at:

http://www.lightsportairplaneservices.com/helicopter.htm

Now, for the price of a few hours of ground school, serious helicopter pilots can gain the benefit of decades of flight experience in a single day. There will be two courses available, each lasting approximately 4 hours.

The first, an Advanced Aeronautical Decision Making Seminar, is titled: “Clarification and Enhancement of Aeronautical Knowledge” This Seminar utilizes numerous, “pop-up” scenarios to illustrate some of the challenges associated with real-world helicopter flight operations. The students will be introduced to thought processes and specific skills which they can then utilize to effectively handle flight challenging situations which they might encounter in their own professional flying. This course picks up where the traditional Commercial/CFI training leaves off. This seminar is being offered by Colorado Heli-Ops for only $99 at 0800 on either Saturday, May 8th and Sunday, May 9th at KBJC airport.

The second, an Advanced Turbine Ground Course, will combine an in-depth discussion and training on turbine helicopter operations and the Rolls-Royce C250 series gas turbine engines, with hands-on examination of multiple facets of a representative helicopter, the popular Bell 206 Jet Ranger. The Turbine seminar will be offered in the same location at 1300 on Saturday May 8th and Sunday May 9th and is also being offered for only $99.

Both seminars will include illustrated texts, which the attendees may keep, and pilots who elect to take both courses not only receive a $40 discount, but will be provided with lunch courtesy of Colorado Heli-Ops during the break in between classes on either day.

Attendance is limited for all classes and demand is expected to be high, so please call Colorado Heli-Ops at 303-466-4354 to reserve your spot for these fantastic learning opportunities. You can also send us an email at ; info@coloradoheliops.com

You can also take this opportunity to fly our FRASCA flight simulator as we will be giving away two gift certificates for one hour each on the sim… others may catch a few moments in the sim during the breaks as we’ll have a specialists on duty the whole weekend.

Please visit our website and down load the pdf of our recent article in Vertical Magazine to find out more about our goals to be a part of the solution…. To help make our industry the best that we can… coloradoheliops.com

Rocky Mountain Regional Fly In and Air Show

Rocky Mountain Metro Airport has decided to switch things up a bit this year! After several years of hosting our Open House, we have decided to take a step back and allow Colorado Sport Aviation (CSA) to step up to the plate. CSA will be hosting The Colorado Sport International Air Show along with The Rocky Mountain Regional Fly-In for their first appearance at Metro Airport on Saturday, August 22nd and Sunday, August 23rd. CSA is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to serve and promote "recreational aviation" through the hosting of an annual Air Show and Regional Fly-In. Therefore tickets for adults will be $15, children 6 -13 years will be $13 and children 5 and under are free.

The Colorado Sport International Air Show, formerly known as the Front Range Air Show, will include several different performances such as glider flight demonstrations, a parachute jumper, a few solo aerobatic performances, mass formation demonstrations, some fly bys and F-16 flight demonstrations. Not only will these exciting performances go on both Saturday and Sunday, 1:00 PM through 4:00 PM, but there will also be a special Twilight Air Show, Saturday night with limited performances starting at 7:00 PM.

Along with the amazing performances from the Colorado Sport International Air Show, the Rocky Mountain Regional Fly-In will be celebrating their 30th year. CSA will be hosting a family oriented weekend event attended by up to 400 aircraft from around the country with a total of approximately 25,000 people. During the 2-day event there will be over 20 educational and safety forums along with building workshops for adults and youth to help spark a new interest in learning and aviation. Various food vendors will be onsite providing a wide range of meals and sundries.

“Metro Airport is happy to partner with CSA to bring this great event into the Denver metro area and help expand its future potential. We are pleased to host an event which not only serves pilots and the aviation industry throughout the Rocky Mountain region, but also provides family fun and enjoyment for our neighbors in the surrounding communities and across the State" - Kenneth Maenpa, Airport Manager.
