National Night Out is a series of nationwide celebrations held on the first Tuesday in August each year; in 2015, Tuesday, August 4th. The purpose of National Night Out is to give neighbors an opportunity to get together in a setting close to home. Of the many crime prevention strategies out there, familiarity and communication among neighbors ranks among the most effective.
National Night Out is also an opportunity for deputies to interact with residents in a positive, relaxed and informal way. Deputies and residents often use NNO as an opportunity to communicate about neighborhood concerns and crime prevention tips. To discover what is in store for this year click here.
There are many different types of NNO events – it all depends on the neighborhood. Some residents host block parties. Sometimes events are built around a barbecue, ice cream social or potluck dinner. Other residents like to plan their events in nearby parks and advertise it in their HOA newsletter ahead of time. Some simply gather in their cul-de-sac and socialize while their children play. Any gathering that gives neighbors a chance to step outside their homes and talk fits the bill!
Representatives from the Sheriff's Office attend neighborhood events throughout the county to answer questions about law enforcement and share effective strategies for fighting crime in our neighborhoods. Deputy involvement depends on availability. You may request a particular special unit or deputy, but due to the growing number of NNO events each year, we cannot guarantee that specific deputies will be available. To request Sheriff's Office attendance please call Deputy Gordon Neuenfeldt at 303-271-5859 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Visit the National Night Out website for ideas about activities you can organize, photos from NNO activities around the nation, and other great tips on making your community strong and safe.
Talk to your neighbors and tell them about National Night Out. Figure out how many might attend and who can help ... and then start planning!
In 1984, the National Association of Town Watch made the first Tuesday in August National Night Out. Also known as "America's Night Out Against Crime," National Night Out has seen participation grow steadily over the years. Last year, over 30 million people participated in National Night Out events all over the world.
