    The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office recognizes the value that retired/separated law enforcement officers bring to the communities where they reside, and we salute you for your years of service to the honorable profession of law enforcement. We have developed a firearms qualification program that enables retired/separated law enforcement officers with an opportunity to maintain firearms qualification on an annual basis in accordance with the mandates of Federal law H.R.218, the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA).

    H.R.218 - The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act

    H.R.218 -"The LEOSA overrides state and local laws, but not other Federal laws such as the Gun-Free School Zone Act of 1995 which prohibits carrying a firearm within 1,000 feet of any elementary or secondary school. LEOSA qualified individuals must continue to obey Federal laws and agency policies that restrict the carrying of concealed firearms in certain Federal buildings and lands. There are two types of state laws that are not overridden by the Federal law, these being "the laws of any state that (1) permit private persons or entities to prohibit or restrict the possession of concealed firearms on their property; or (2) prohibit or restrict the possession of firearms on any state or local government property, installation, building, base, or park." This does not mean that LEOSA qualified persons are prohibited from carrying concealed firearms in such areas, but only that they must obey whatever state laws apply on those two points. They are free to disregard all other state and local laws that govern the carrying of concealed firearms."

    Mandatory Requirements

    The following items are mandatory requirements, and must be accomplished prior to allowing you to qualify on the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office firearms range:

    • You must be a current resident of Jefferson County (Exception: retired/separated from JCSO).
    • You must complete a "County Sheriffs of Colorado" application
    • You must present a valid Colorado driver's license
    • You must present an original photo identification issued by the agency you retired/separated from as a law enforcement officer
    • A $13 fee to JCSO in the form of cash, money order, Mastercard or Visa is due upon initial application submittal (there is a one-time fee if renewals are kept current with this agency). Per House Bill 13-1118 this fee covers a background name check through the Colorado Bureau of Investigation
      You must provide the following as proof of law enforcement service which reflects a total of at least 10 aggregate years of service (there is an exception for those who retired earlier due to a service-connected disability). If all 10 years of service were with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, there is no need for a letter.
      • Official letterhead letters.memos from the CEO of each agency you were employed. The letters must indicate your dates of service and that you retired/separated in good standing
    • In order to comply with Federal regulations, you must qualify once a year with the same type firearm(s) (auto/revolver) as you plan to carry concealed. Therefore, you must provide your own handgun(s) and ammunition for the weapon(s) and it must be 'lead free'. Ammunition must be in its original factory container and 'store' purchased. Reloaded ammunition is strictly prohibited.
