Emergency Notification Myths De-Bunked

ALL Jefferson County residents and businesses are urged to register their wireless phone numbers or VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone numbers to receive emergency notifications. "Land line" phones are automatically included in the CodeRED database, although for optimization please verify your information is accurate. Sign up with CodeRED today!
Myth: Because I live in a remote location, the system won’t be able to find me.
Myth: CodeRED isn’t vital in an emergency. It’s here to notify me of Farmer’s Markets, tree lightings, and movie nights.
Myth: I am registered and guaranteed to receive a call when a disaster occurs.
Myth: I can have my landline removed from CodeRED when and if I choose.
Myth: I can have my phone number associated with several addresses so I can monitor my parents’ home and my kids as well.
Myth: I can only register one phone number for my address
Myth: I can select the types of emergency situations that I want to be include in the notification and exclude others.
Myth: I have call screening/interception to discourage telemarketers. I will not receive the alert.
Myth: I have to pay for the service.
Myth: I never get any calls, so the system isn’t valuable.
Myth: I only like to be notified with text alerts, and the system does not offer this yet.
Myth: I will still receive emergency notifications if I don’t sign up.
Myth: I’ve created a profile on Smart911 already so I’m covered.
Myth: If I am on vacation I won't be contacted if an emergency affects the address entered.
Myth: If I don’t answer my phone the system will not leave a message.
Myth: If I make a mistake on my account I am on my own to make corrections.
Myth: If I miss part of the message there is no way to retrieve it again.
Myth: If I need notified I can just listen to the police scanner.
Myth: If the power grid fails I won’t receive the notification on my landline anyway.
Myth: It’s really complicated to add my phone number to the CodeRED database.
Myth: My number will be sold to telemarketers.
Myth: Since I downloaded the App onto my device it will cover these types of notifications.
Myth: The sheriff’s office already has my phone number.
Myth: These calls count against my cell phones minutes plan.
