    Shooting leaves one teen dead

Jefferson County, CO. – On December 23, 2016, at 3:00 p.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a shooting in the 11300 block of West Bowles Place. Deputies arrived and found 14-year-old Nathaniel Griego suffering from a gunshot wound. Griego was transported to a local hospital, where on December 26th, he was declared deceased.

When the shooting occurred, Griego and a friend were at the single family home where Griego resides with his grandparents. Griego and his friend, a 15-year-old boy, were playing with a gun belonging to a family member of one of the boys. Griego’s friend fired a shot, striking Griego. The friend ran from the house and contacted his sister who called 911. He then proceeded on foot to the area of C-470 and W. Bowles Ave. where he hid the gun on the hogback that runs parallel to C-470. He was contacted a short time later and placed into custody without incident. He cooperated with investigators in locating the gun the next day. Through the course of the investigation it was determined that there was no strict deliberation on the part of the friend to shoot Griego.

Griego’s friend was arrested for suspicion of reckless manslaughter, juvenile in possession of a handgun, and tampering with physical evidence. He is being held at the Mount View Youth Detention Facility pending a bond hearing on December 30th.
Services for Nathaniel Griego are pending.
