Since 1993, the sheriff's office has undertaken the awesome responsibility of providing respectful care to victims of crime and trauma. The program has steadily grown and developed, and today the Victim Services Unit is a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week response team.
Each week the Victim Services Unit reviews thousands of reports taken by Jeffco deputies. Advocates provide follow-up contact with victims of burglaries, criminal mischiefs, assaults, domestic violence, sex crimes, robberies, runaways, harassments and other crimes.
Every month, advocates mail out hundreds of letters, make hundreds of phone calls and meet directly with the victims of critical incidents.
The work of the Victim Services unit is based on the Colorado Victim Rights Amendment.
The People Comforters are a quilting club based in Evergreen who create handmade quilts for victims of crime and crisis. The People Comforters give their completed quilts to the Victim Services Unit, and advocates from Victim Services bring the quilts along to help comfort Jeffco victims. The People Comforters sew nearly 300 quilts each year for the Sheriff's Office, in addition to their projects for the Colorado State Patrol and other groups. Many thanks to these special volunteers for the generous contributions of their time and skill.
Each spring, representatives from the sheriff's office, district attorney's office and other victim service organizations gather for the annual Courage Walk. The Courage Walk coincides with National Crime Victims' Rights Week and is a time to honor the strength and courage of survivors we have come to know in the aftermath of crime.
Victim Services also administers the "Deputy HUGS" adopt-a-bear program.
The victim services professional resource directory can be an invaluable resource to find professionals, products or other services for families and individuals. The resource directory is not a comprehensive listing of these types of services. The resource directory includes listings of those that choose to be listed here. Placement of a directory listing does not represent an endorsement by Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, nor does it represent any testimony as to the quality or validity of the claims from the services listed. Jefferson County reserves the right to accept, or reject listings at any time.
