>> Sheriff's Office to Aid Residents in Graffiti Cleanup (01/2007)

mink_web_3Behind the Badge: A Message from Sheriff Ted Mink

Graffiti on Private Property
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office received a grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation to help victims remove graffiti from their property promptly, while minimizing the cost of doing so.

Unincorporated Jefferson County had nearly 300 reported incidents of graffiti in 2006.  Quick removal of graffiti has proven to be the best deterrent.  In 2006, the Sheriff's Office enlisted its inmate worker crew to remove graffiti from public property, such as street signs.  However, graffiti on private property has remained a problem for the property owner to solve alone.

The Wal-Mart Foundation has awarded a grant providing $1,500 to the Sheriff's Office to purchase graffiti removal supplies, such as paint, paint thinner and sandpaper, for residents and business owners whose property has been "tagged" or defaced.

To qualify for supplies through the grant, residents must first report the graffiti to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office at 303-277-0211.  For more information or to obtain supplies for removing graffiti, contact the Crime Prevention Unit at 720-377-2002.

In Other News: Thefts at Schools
The Sheriff's Office has seen a trend in iPod thefts at local middle and high schools.  Valuables such as iPods, cell phones and wallets can be stolen quickly and easily when not properly secured.  Leaving valuables in backpacks, gym bags or unlocked lockers makes them vulnerable to theft.  The Sheriff's Office strongly recommends that students not bring iPods to school; students who do take these items to school should place them in a locked locker.
