>> Sex Offenders (10/2007)

mink_web_3A Message from Sheriff Ted Mink

In recent years, our communities have grown ever more concerned about registered sex offenders.  Jefferson County residents have a keen awareness of the issues, as well as an interest in protecting their families from those offenders who may pose a threat.

What is a registered sex offender?
A registered sex offender is someone who has been convicted of a sexual crime, and who has been ordered by a judge to report regularly to the law enforcement agency where he or she lives.  Sexual crimes may include indecent exposure, sexual assault, or sexual assault on a child.  Sex offenders come from all backgrounds, ages, income levels, and professions.  About 96 percent of offenders are male.

How do I know if any sex offenders live near me?
For residents of unincorporated Jeffco, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Web site offers a map of registered offenders. Because registry occurs at the Sheriff's Office, the Sheriff's Office is the best and most accurate source of information for residents.  We do not recommend obtaining the information from any other source, and you should never pay a company for this information.  If you live outside unincorporated Jeffco, check with your local police department for its list of registered offenders.  The Colorado Bureau of Investigation also maintains a list of sexually violent predators, and offenders who have failed to register and are unaccounted for.

What's the difference between a sex offender and a sexually violent predator?
By definition, sexually violent predators (SVPs) pose a higher risk to re-offend the first year upon release from prison.  Sexually violent predators are given their designation by the court or the state parole board.  SVPs make up less than 1 percent of all registered offenders.  When an SVP moves to unincorporated Jeffco, the Sheriff's Office must notify the community about his or her presence.

What if a sex offender lives in my neighborhood?
It is unlawful to attack or harass any identified sex offender, his/her significant other, or his/her property.  Currently, there are no legal restrictions on where sex offenders may reside.  A common misconception is that offenders may not live near schools or parks; this is not the case.  Although you may not be comfortable living in close proximity to a sex offender, your best course of action is to make wise decisions about your own personal safety and your children's.

Personal Safety Tips

- Be careful in your use of alcohol and drugs
- Use caution in making personal contact with people on the Internet
