>> Avoiding Holiday Hazards (11/2007)

mink_web_3Behind the Badge: A Message from Sheriff Ted Mink

As if holiday shopping isn't stressful enough, think how much more stressed you would be if you became the victim of a crime during one of your shopping excursions.  There are many ways for criminals to take advantage of shoppers, but there are just as many ways to protect yourself.

Vehicle Break-Ins and Vehicle Theft
Don't leave your purchases or your purse in plain view in your vehicle.  They are easy targets for criminals breaking into cars in full parking lots.  Some criminals even survey the parking lot to watch people's activities, so don't return to the store after filling your car with shopping bags.  Consider driving to another parking area.  Keep in mind that purses are the number one target for thieves breaking into vehicles.

Never leave your car running while dashing in to the coffee shop on the way to the mall.   An empty, running vehicle with exhaust puffing into the wintry air is to a car thief like taking candy from a baby.

Fraud
It's not just that new iPod thieves are after -- they want your identity too.  When you go shopping, don't carry more information than you have to.  Purge your purse or wallet of social security cards and excess credit cards.  If somehow your belongings are stolen, you'll have a major headache to deal with, but it won't be as bad as it could have been.  Better yet, leave your purse at home, and bring only your identification and one credit card, or cash.  You'll have less to juggle.

Also, whether at home or at a store, be wary of solicitations for donations.  Give only to organizations you know and trust.  If you're not sure, ask the representative for a brochure so that you can donate by mail later.

Theft & Robbery
The busier a shopping center is, the easier it can be for criminals to steal from you.  Don't leave items like strollers, diaper bags, or shopping bags unattended, even for a moment.  Don't leave your purse in your shopping cart while you return to the previous aisle for the item you forgot.  It only takes a moment for someone to reach in and steal your wallet -- a theft you won't notice until you're in the checkout line, and the thief is long gone.

Personal Safety
The holidays can be chaotic: in the shops, on the roads, at the airport, in the school drop-off zone.  Exercise patience and remember that everyone is in the same boat.  Stress can lead to aggression and poor decision making.  In extreme cases, it can lead to unsafe driving, accidents, road rage, threats, or assaults.

Driving Under the Influence
The winter holiday season is like many other holidays, in that celebrations often involve alcohol.  The difference is that parties may be spread out over several weeks, instead of just one weekend.  Always designate a driver, never drive drunk, and be especially cautious on the roads knowing that not everyone will be so careful.  Report dangerous drivers by calling 9-1-1.
