Jeffco Sheriff's Office

About the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office

sergeantThe Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) was founded in November 1859 and today serves 184,640 residents in the unincorporated areas of the county. As the largest full service sheriff's office in Colorado, the agency has more than 500 sworn deputies and more than 200 non-sworn employees who provide services to the community.

The Sheriff's Office is organized into three divisions: Detention ServicesLaw Enforcement Services and Support Services, each of which is commanded by a division chief

The agency is housed in multiple locations throughout the county, with its headquarters and jail in Golden.

The Sheriff's Office has grown and advanced along with its communities. Today, it is one of the most progressive law enforcement agencies in the nation. Highly specialized in-house units include K-9, SWAT, Bomb Squad, Criminalistics, Victim Services and the Communication Center.  The Sheriff's Office also operates the county jail, which underwent an expansion in 2000.

Along with its progressive technologies and policies, the Sheriff's Office employs the trappings of tradition and history.  Officers' uniforms are forest green, in keeping with the tradition of the agency.  Patrol vehicles, beginning in 2005, now adhere to a classic black and white design.

The sheriff of Jefferson County is an elected public official. The sheriff and his appointed undersheriff serve four years per term.

JCSO is accredited by several independent national and international organizations.
