Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP)

CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT INFORMATION

Applications are accepted Monday - Friday (except holidays)  8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
at 200 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden, CO - Records Unit
Incomplete packets will not be accepted and applicants
must be at least 21 years of age at time of application

New Applicants

Required items:
  1. Application (pdf), not signed.  Applications must be signed in the presence of the county sheriff/designee.  A Supplemental Form (pdf) must be completed if you answer "yes" to #14 on the application.
  2. Proof of residency - applicants must provide proof of Colorado residency by providing a valid Colorado driver's license, Colorado ID, or Military ID along with permanent duty orders for Colorado.  If the address on ther driver's license or ID doesn't match the application, the applicant is required to provide other proof of residency such as a lease/rental agreement, property tax statement, utility bill, or vehicle registration.
  3. Handgun Training Certificate - (on-line and home study training courses will not be accepted) - Per C.R.S. 18-12-203, applicants must demonstrate competence with a handgun by submitting one of the following: (details).  Certificates must contain the applicant's name, course name, date of course and instructor's original signature.
  4. Fee - $125 made payable to JCSO ($72.50 = JCSO / $52.50 = CBI/FBI)
    Cash, MasterCard, Visa, money order, cashier's check or certified check accepted (no personal or business checks) 
  5. Application and attachments must be submitted in person to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Records Unit, 200 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden, Colorado. (map and directions).
  6. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office will take one set of fingerprints.
  7. Once you are approved for a permit, you will be contacted to come back in.  At that time, you will be photographed and receive a permit card.  Permit cards are the property of the Sheriff's Office.





Renewal Applicants

Permits which have expired more than 6 months must start the process over as a "new" applicant.  It is the responsibility of the applicant to submit renewal for a permit prior to the expiration date.  Within 120 days prior to the expiration of your permit, you may submit an application.  The "Proof of Firearms Training" on the back of the application does not pertain to renewal applicants unless you are renewing a permit from another county.

Required items:

  1. Application (pdf), not signed.  Applications must be signed in the presence of the county sheriff or their designee.  A Supplemental Form (pdf) must be completed if you answer "yes" to #14 on the application.
  2. Proof of residency - applicants must provide proof of Colorado residency by providing a valid Colorado driver's license, Colorado ID, or Military ID along with permanent duty orders for Colorado.  If the address on ther driver's license or ID doesn't match the application, the applicant is required to provide other proof of residency such as a lease/rental agreement, property tax statement, utility bill, or vehicle registration.
  3. Fee - $53 made payable to JCSO ($40 = JCSO / $13 = CBI) - if permit is not expired
    Fee - $68 made payable to JCSO ($55 = JCSO / $13 = CBI) - if permit is expired, but not more than 6 months expired.  If your permit is more than 6 months expired, you must start the process over as a "new" applicant.
    Fee - $92.50 made payable to JCSO ($40 = JCSO / $52.50 = CBI/FBI) - if you have a permit that was issued by another county.  You must supply a handgun training certificate that is not more than 10 years old.  Per CBI, the issuing agency must have prints on file for the individual applying for a permit.
    Cash, MasterCard, Visa, money order, cashier's check or certified check accepted (no personal or business checks) 
  4. Application and attachments must be submitted in person to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Records Unit, 200 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden, Colorado. (map and directions).
  5. Once you are approved for a permit, you will be contacted to come back in.  At that time, you will be photographed and receive a new permit card in exchange for your old permit card.  Permit cards are the property of the Sheriff's Office.




Retired Peace Officers

Per C.R.S. 18-12-212, these permits are only valid to Peace Officers who have retired within the last 5 years.  Required items include: Application, retired photo ID, valid Colorado driver's license or ID, qualification records within last 10 years, and a letter written by the former chief, sheriff, or superior officer attesting to the following information: You are a legal resident of Colorado; You are not ineligible to possess a firearm per Federal law; You have not been convicted of perjury; You do not chronically or habitually use alcoholic drinks; You do not unlawfully use or are addicted to a controlled substance; and You are not the subject of any type of restraining order.  Although fingerprints and fees are waived, these permits are only valid 5 years and are non-renewable.  Once expired, applicant may apply for a new permit by submitting an application, fingerprints and $125.  Qualification records may be used for the handgun training requirements.

  2. Recommendation letter.
  3. Proof of firearms training within the past 10 years.
  4. Proof of residency - applicants must provide proof of Colorado residency by providing a valid Colorado driver's license or Colorado ID.  If the address on ther driver's license or ID doesn't match the application, the applicant is required to provide other proof of residency such as a lease/rental agreement, property tax statement, utility bill, or vehicle registration.
